DOUBLE CUP ANNIVERSARY IN SKELMERSDALE
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Saturday 30th July 2016 is a national day to remember for the nation’s football supporters. It will also be a day to bring back the memories for any football follower aged from their mid-fifties onward who lives or did in West Lancashire in the 1960’s. Nationally it is the day in 1966 when a certain Geoffrey Hurst hit a hat-trick at Wembley to send the country into a mass celebration when England picked up the World Cup. It is a sure thing that the fiftieth anniversary of that great day will be well represented in the English media. It by sheer coincidence it is also the day Skelmersdale United have chosen to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their great Wembley occasion. Skelmersdale’s Wembley meeting with Enfield in the 1967 FA Amateur Cup Final was actually played on Saturday 22nd May 1967 with a replay at Manchester City’s Maine Road on Saturday 29th April and stories abound about how ‘the whole town’ went down to London for the day. The Champion will be telling that story later in the month, but Skelmersdale United are expecting a big attendance on the day, as many from the town will again come out to celebrate the occasion and revive the memories. The game itself is being relived as Enfield Town make the trip up from North London, Skelmersdale will make the return trip during the 2017/18 pre-season and many of the Skelmersdale players who walked out at Wembley will be at Stormy Corner on the day. Skelmersdale United are offering local businesses the opportunity to get on board and meet the heroes of 1967, by offering a multitude of sponsorship’s, whether it be the a hospitality package or just a programme add so that your company name can go down in history for the next fifty years. It should be a great day for Skelmersdale and you can see how you can take part by phoning 01695 575958.

Enfield home 30th July
EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Skelmersdale United are looking forward to hosting Enfield Town next Saturday in the first of two special friendlies to mark the upcoming fiftieth anniversary of their epic meeting in the FA Amateur Cup Final.
Back in 1967 it was Enfield who claimed the cup with a 3-0 win at Maine Road following a 0-0 draw at Wembley in front of 76,000 supporters seven days earlier on Saturday 22 April 1967.
After taking on the Ryman Premier's Towners, the successor club founded by fans of the original Enfield, Skem are set to travel south next summer to their Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.
Skem are hoping for a bumper turn-out next Saturday as they remember one of the biggest days in their history which saw a mass exodus from the Lancashire town to Wembley.
Officials say many of the players who were in action that day have pledged to be at Stormy Corner for the reunion match including Alan Bermingham, John Unsworth, Richie Wade, Dave Moorcroft, Micky Worswick, Wally Bennett, Micky Burns and Alan McDermott.
Skem, coached by Liverpool legend Ian St John on their route to the final, went on to lift the FA Amateur Cup four years later when they beat Dagenham at Wembley in 1971.
Skelmersdale United press officer Neil Leatherbarrow said: "It was one to remember, the day Skelmersdale left en bloc for London. It was a massive thing for the town and almost 50 years later this is arguably the era when Skelmersdale have had our best team since then. We're hoping for a big crowd to celebrate a special day."
