FA TROPHY DRAW SETS UP WEST LANCASHIRE DERBY
By Neil Leatherbarrow
The FA announced the opening rounds of The FA Cup, FA Trophy and FA Youth Cup last Friday and although Skelmersdale United supporters will have to wait until the end of August to find out who will be their first opponents in the ‘big one’, the FA Trophy has set up the prospect of a real occasion in the 1st Round Qualifying, where if Burscough can beat Kendal Town, they will visit Stormy Corner for what is bound to be an exciting encounter.
The last time the two local rivals met in an FA Cup tie was back in 2004 when Stormy Corner rocked as the sides generated a thrilling five goal battle in front of a four figure gate. The only league encounters between the two were in 2012/13 when again they produced ten goals over the two matches.
The FA Youth Cup will see Hyde United visit Stormy Corner to take on Paul Nicholson’s youngsters in the opening match.
The Evo-Stik Premier Division fixtures will take the precedence this week when they are published on Friday morning. The Champion will have a full report on those in next week’s edition.
There is plenty for Skelmersdale supporters to look forward to before the season starts for real on Saturday 13th August, starting with a game at Stormy Corner against Accrington Stanley next week on Tuesday 19th July kick off 7-45pm.
The other highlights of their pre-season programme include, the visit of Everton on Thursday 28th July for the Liverpool County FA Senior Cup semi-final, kick off 7-45pm.
Then Enfield Town for the re-run of the 1967 FA Amateur Cup Final on Saturday 30th July
and the visit of Welsh Premier League runners-up and UEFA Europa League fighters Bala Town on Saturday 6th August. One away match of note is the West Lancashire Derby trip to Victoria Park Burscough on Tuesday 2nd August.
Supporters are reminded that season tickets are on sale at £180 and £100, with the added bonus that if you purchase yours early you can have free entry to all the pre-season friendlies. You can get yours by phoning 01695 575958
