SKELMERSDALE ROMP TO SIX GOAL CUP VICTORY
PRESCOT CABLES 0 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 6
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Skelmersdale United manager Tommy Lawson elected to field a strong team for the Doodson Sports Cup First Round tie at Valerie Park and he reaped the rewards, three goals in each half giving Skem a 6-0 victory that will do plenty to maintain the confidence of his promotion chasing side.
After putting the Cables defence under intense pressure in the early stages, Skelmersdale struck on the quarter-hour. A passing movement that involved around seven or eight passes gave Dean Astbury the opportunity to power a shot high into the Prescot net from around 12 yards.
Nine minutes later it was 2-0, Astbury firing a goalbound shot that was deflected across goal by a home defender.
After Tom Ince brought a superb save out of home goalkeeper Ciaran Gibson, Skelmersdale bagged a third goal right on the stroke of half-time. Shaun Tuck received the ball in the inside left channel, cut inside one defender, then went outside another before switching feet and rifling the ball low into the net with his right-foot.
Skelmersdale had the game in the bag and they still dominated possession after the interval.
Tuck brought a top-drawer diving save out of Gibson with a half-volley then Adam Morning went close with a header and Rio Ahmadi was unlucky, before United made it 4-0 with a terrific goal from Tom Ince. The ball was held up and rolled back to Ince, who went into the penalty area with a sprinters burst of pace and gave Gibson no chance from 10 yards.
As the full-time whistle beckoned Ahmadi lifted the ball over Gibson to make it five and deep into added time Matty Hughes came inside from the right and scored a goal that has been due for a couple of weeks.
