Skelmersdale United moved back to top position in the Evo-Stik Premier Division with a devastating second-half performance against the men from east of Manchester, at the West Lancashire College Stadium. Tied at 2-2 when the half-time whistle went Skelmersdale manager Tommy Lawson went to work in the dressing room, but there was no raised voices. Tommy commented after the game: “There was no shouting at half-time. I simply told the players to be patient. I said they would finish the stronger team.” A methodology that clearly worked as his side netted five times in the second-half and were 4-2 up eight minutes after the restart.
Skelmersdale took the initiative from the off. Matty Hughes and Ashley Dunn combining to set Dean Astbury for a shot that went just wide inside the first minute.
Skelmersdale struck after twelve minutes. Young six foot plus defender Jonah O’Reilly went forward for a free-kick that was only partially cleared, O’Reilly won the ball back himself with a tackle around 25 yards from goal, he set off again for goal and when Astbury played the ball into the box, O’Reilly stooped to head home a goal on his first start in the first team.
Six minutes later Droylsden levelled. Astbury saw a shot saved by visiting goalkeeper Sam Andrew, who instantly dispatched a long clearance over the whole Skelmersdale team to Domaine Rouse, who rounded Ryan McMahon to score.
In the 27th minute, Dunn and Astbury combined together again, this time Shaun Tuck was the recipient and he made it 2-1.
Droylsden came back again, this time in only three minutes. A free-kick was hoisted into the Skelmersdale area, McMahon and two defenders collided and Pavik Fernandes-Balde was able to tap the ball into the net.
One thing Skelmersdale are is difficult to beat and after having far more of the possession in the first period, they quickly produced an end result to the good approach work after the interval.
Tuck ran through and was upended by Ryan Hibbert with the goal seemingly at his mercy. Kenny Strickland’s free kick rocked the upright and ran to the right-wing, Hughes put it back into the box and Tuck netted from around a yard.
In the 53rd minute, Tom Ince found Astbury who controlled the ball well and slotted it under Andrew.
Andrew dived full length to keep out another Strickland free-kick, then made a top class save from Alan Burton, however he had no chance what so ever in the 69th minute. Hughes cut in from the right and thundered a shot across the keeper into the far corner.
At 5-2 the game was won and some of the urgency went out of Skelmersdale’s game. Adam Morning brought one high point with an 83rd minute goal that was sheer audacity. Morning initially beat the Droylsden offside trap but forced wide elected not to shoot at goal, he turned and dribbled back past three defenders, turned again and shot at goal from about eight yards, sending two defenders on the goal-line the wrong way with the shot.
On ninety minutes Droylsden pulled a goal back via a Matt German diving header, but not to be out done, Astbury ran up the other end and fired home a seventh for Skelmersdale in added time, to make it sixteen goals in the last three matches for Skem.
