SKELMERSDALE TRAP MARINE IN STORM SURGE
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 4 MARINE 1
By Neil Leatherbarrow
After the injustice they suffered at Worksop in the last game of 2013, Skelmersdale United were determined to make a point in the New Year’s Day derby with Marine at the West Lancashire College Stadium and the Mariners were caught in the wake of the storm created in Nottinghamshire. Tommy Lawson’s men swept into a convincing 3-0 half-time lead then made no doubt at all about the destination of the three points with a fourth goal early in the second-half for a convincing victory.
Arguably the biggest threat the visitors were to pose all afternoon passed in the 2nd minute when Andy Fowler and Matty Devine combined to go close.
Gradually the longer the half progressed the stronger Skelmersdale looked.
Matty Hughes had a penalty appeal turned down in the 19th minute, and then Marine goalkeeper Callum Williams did enough to force Adam Morning away from goal as Skelmersdale broke through in the 21st minute.
On the half hour a move instigated by Tom Ince made Williams save from Dean Astbury at the second attempt, then Astbury saw his goalbound shot deflected wide a minute later.
A goal was coming such was the Skelmersdale dominance during this period. In the 37th minute it arrived and opened up the floodgates. Initially Williams pulled off an excellent tip over the crossbar to keep out a drive from the Skelmersdale United Debbie Nicholson Man of the Match Mike Simpson. From the ensuing left-wing corner the ball dropped to Hughes on the 18 yard line, after sending one the defender the wrong way and evading the lunging challenge of another Hughes put the ball powerfully into the roof of Williams net.
A minute later it was two. Astbury being sent away down the inside-left channel before despatching a low shot across Williams into the far corner.
It was three goals in four minutes by the 40th minute. The Marine defence were in such a state of disarray by that time, that when Morning entered the penalty area the challenge from Jonathan Goulding could only have one outcome and the left midfielder duly found the net.
It was almost four before the interval, Simpson’s shot was saved and Astbury was unlucky with the rebound.
Former Skelmersdale midfielder Lee Parle put a shot over the Skelmersdale crossbar soon after the restart, but it was a very brief fight back from Marine, because in the 53rd minute the game was rubber stamped as won by Skelmersdale. Simpson’s shot deflected out for a corner, this time on the right. From the flag kick Astbury lost his marker and volleyed home with such ferocity that those immediately behind the Clubhouse end net ducked. The striker had left Marine earlier in the season to join Skelmersdale and he will have gleaned a great deal of pleasure from his brace of goals.
Skelmersdale eased off somewhat with the game won and by the end Marine had two efforts, Zac Hibbert superbly saving from Jamie Rainford and the other finding the net with only six minutes left via substitute Karl Noon.
