ASTBURY HAT-TRICK AS SKELMERSDALE GO INTO DOODSON FINAL
CARLTON TOWN 2 SKELMERDALE UNITED 4
By Neil Leatherbarrow
A burst of goals at the beginning of the second-half were enough to see off the considerable challenge of the Nottinghamshire giant killers and put Skelmersdale United into the final of the Doodson Sports Cup (League Cup) on Sunday 13th April. The Skem hero on the night was striker Dean Astbury who was much too sharp in front of goal for the Carlton defence.
The Stoke Lane based club have built up a reputation for embarrassing some of the Evo-Stik League’s bigger clubs this season. On their way to the semi-final they had defeated Stamford, Buxton and FC United of Manchester, having already put Matlock Town out of the FA Cup earlier in the season. So it was no surprise Skelmersdale fielded a strong starting line-up and attacked them from the off.
Astbury was rampant and after eight minutes he had had a shot deflected wide and had been thwarted by home goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi with another attempt.
In the 12th minute a slick move down the left-hand side involving Shaun Holden put Tom Ince into the home penalty area at pace, where Viscosi felled him and a penalty was awarded. Captain Tom Hardwick stepped up to take the responsibility of despatching it low into the net.
Carlton are a hard working team and in the 22nd minute Zac Hibbert made a decent save to keep out the hosts Joseph Brothwell.
In the 24th minute it was 2-0. A passing move developed on the right-wing and the ball was delivered to Astbury’s feet around 15 yards from goal, he slipped away from his marker, turned and rifled a shot wide of Viscosi and into the net.
The game tightened up a lot after the second Skelmersdale goal; it had to really because Carlton were being dominated. They came back strongly.
Carlton pressed but Skelmersdale’s defence showed their strength by keeping them at arm’s length until a slip in the 42nd minute that was driven into the top corner by Carlton’s impressive number nine Sammy MacVicar.
Skelmersdale upped the tempo again after the restart and it had the desired effect, forcing Carlton back into defensive mode. An Astbury shot kissed the outside of the post then Viscosi tipped an Ashley Dunn shot over the crossbar before doing the dame to an Alan Burton effort.
A goal was coming. In the 56th minute a Burton header was cleared off the line. Seconds later Mark Jackson played the ball to Astbury who thundered a shot into the net from 20 yards to make it 3-1.
In the 62nd minute it was all over, or almost. Dunn was slipped into the penalty via the inside-left channel; he was tripped by Josh Thornton. Astbury took the spot-kick this time no doubt having the ownership of the matchball in mind. Viscosi dived full-length to push it away; however the razor like Astbury smashed home the rebound to complete a well-deserved hat-trick.
Carlton threw caution to the wind and went onto the offensive and again had success as a run of corners saw the ball fall to MacVicar, who made it 4-2.
The home team to their credit didn’t give up, time and again they threatened the Skelmersdale goal, but time and again Skelmersdale fended them off.
In the end it was a good victory for Skelmersdale as make no mistake, on this form Carlton would more than hold their own in the Premier Division and it was easy to see why they have the cup reputation they have.
