THE SIGNS ARE GOOD FOR SKELMERSDALE
KING’S LYNN TOWN 3 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 3
By Neil Leatherbarrow
The long coach trip and the sunshine brought out the best in Skelmersdale United on their trip to Norfolk as Tommy Lawson’s side showed that they are imminently due to bounce back to form. United recovered from two goals down and came within a coat of paint of bringing all three points back to Lancashire, in a strong finish.
Skelmersdale opened strongly too, in the fifth minute Sean Miller was only kept out by a good save from home goalkeeper Alex Street after Connor McCarthy won a battle with the defence to set him up. In the eighth minute they found the target, Tom Ince was fouled in the penalty area “D” then Dean Astbury curled the resulting free-kick into the top corner.
Both teams had set out to score goals and King’s Lynn weren’t long in finding the net themselves. Liam Hurst sliding Andy Hall in for a chance he finished well in the 14th minute.
Five minutes later it was 2-1 to the hosts, David Bell running into space on the right before floating a ball to the far post that was powerfully headed home by Hall.
King’s Lynn made it three goals in eleven minutes in the 25th minute, with almost a carbon copy of the second, Bell again sending a cross deep into the Skelmersdale area, this time Hall timed his run to perfection and again headed home to make it a hat-trick.
Skelmersdale had always looked a threat in attack and in the 35th minute they pulled a goal back in devastating style. Ashley Dunn cleverly finding Astbury, who after holding off a challenge sent a screamer of a shot high into the home goal.
Both teams went close again before the interval as the intensity of the game didn’t let up. Astbury was thwarted by a superb tackle from Ryan Clarke then Miller saw a goalbound shot bravely blocked, while for Town George Thomson hit the post.
Both teams needed the half-time break to get some breath back.
The second-half started just the way the first had ended. Skelmersdale’s debutant goalkeeper Connor Mitchell saved low down from Bell. Then down the other end Astbury and Miller then Astbury again with a cross put McCarthy in for a goal that was disallowed for offside.
In the last twenty minutes Skelmersdale got the upper hand. In the 72nd minute Miller went agonisingly close to an Aaron Turner cross, however five minutes later Skelmersdale got their reward. An Ince free-kick was headed at goal by Tom Hardwick, Street fumbled and before he could recover the ball Astbury forced the ball home to complete his hat-trick.
In the last five minutes Mitchell saved a remarkable effort from Bell as the midfielder was in his own half when shooting at the Skelmersdale goal, then he palmed away a Thomson free-kick.
Two minutes into added time Miller played the ball to Astbury and the strikers shot took a coat of paint off the King’s Lynn post.
It had been tremendous entertainment for everyone, not least the two players who registered hat-tricks. But perhaps more significantly, by the end Skelmersdale had much of confidence back that has been missing recently. It may just be the right time to find it.
