UNLUCKY SKEM STILL UNBEATEN
RUSHALL OLYMPIC 0 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 0
By Neil Leatherbarrow
If some magic football genie had said that Skelmersdale United would draw at Rushall’s Dales Lane ground, it could be said that Skelmersdale would have been quite happy with that, it’s a difficult place to go and Olympic are a big strong powerful team, but by the end of the match Tommy Lawson’s men must have felt a little hard done to. For long spells they looked the most likely team to score and but for a great performance by debutant home goalkeeper Cameron Belford, they probably would have scored. In conclusion, Skelmersdale were arguably a bit unlucky to only draw.
Rushall started well, but Skelmersdale nowadays defend well and it is no fluke that they have only conceded one goal in their opening five games and barring a shot wide of the target by Nathan Rooney their wasn’t much to get too worried about as Rushall had more of the play in the first fifteen minutes.
Skelmersdale started to threaten and on 20 minutes Dan Mitchley beat his man on the left only to see Dean Astbury arrive in the box fractionally too late to get a finishing connection with his cross, followed soon afterwards by a hot from Peter Wylie that just went over the crossbar.
Although, Rob McIntosh cleared off the line on 31 minutes it was a situation he always looked to have under control and by the interval Belford was back into action with a magnificent save from Curtis Thompson.
It was one way traffic for ten minutes after half-time and how Skelmersdale didn’t score was down to fate and goalkeeper Belford.
Seconds in, Tom Ince dummied, but Belford saved from Kenny Strickland, then Ince passed when maybe a shot would have bought about a goal.
On fifty minutes an Ince shot came close to a far post tap-in then Ince was at it again helping on an Aidan Kirkbride cross, that Mitchley put over the crossbar.
Rushall had a brief foray up the other end in 57 & 58 minutes, but Martin Fearon saved from Josh Craddock and Aaron Farrell.
The last ten minutes was thrilling, but at the same time frustrating for Skelmersdale. Belford saved with his foot from Thompson then Rob Bodie was denied a first goal for Skelmersdale when the referee decreed that Michael Monaghan had fouled Belford as Strickland’s corner curled into the box.
When, with seconds left McIntosh headed inches wide of the far post, it just about summed up Skelmersdale’s afternoon. A point won definitely, but oh so near to three points won.
