SKELMERSDALE “OUT-PHYSICALLED”
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 1 BARWELL 3
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Barwell arrived at Stormy Corner from Leicestershire looking a big strong team and in the end it was the key factor to what was a difficult afternoon for Skelmersdale United, but it was still one that they may have overcome with better luck, especially when they hit post moments before half-time.
Skelmersdale could have taken the lead after around a minute. The ball went down the inside-right channel to young forward Connor McCarthy, but instead of shooting at goal, he elected to square the ball across goal and Barwell survived.
When two minutes later Dan Mitchley fired over the Barwell crossbar it looked like Skelmersdale were going to grab an early advantage, but Barwell gathered themselves and with the aid of regular long balls aimed at their six foot something, plenty of stone centre-forward Luke Barlone, they started to pose a threat at the other end, including forcing Skelmersdale goalkeeper Martin Fearon into palming the ball away after 5 minutes.
On the half-hour it was Barwell goalkeeper Liam Castle who pulled off one of the saves of the day, pushing a Kenny Strickland free-kick over the crossbar after a foul on Mitchley.
Just as the interval beckoned, Mitchley himself came close, but he hit the post with an audible thud, that again let Barwell off the hook.
Seconds after the restart Barwell didn’t let Skelmersdale off the hook and the big man Barlone showed he could play a bit. He chested the ball down perfectly to create a shooting angle, swung his right-foot and sent the ball whistling into the Skelmersdale net from 25 yards.
Things got even worse for Skelmersdale five minutes later. Barlone stood out like a tree offside and Skelmersdale appealed, while they did Alex Tomkinson nipped onto the ball from an onside position and was fouled by Danny Wisdom, the result a red card. So Skelmersdale were a goal down and now a man down.
At the clubhouse end, McCarthy was denied by a tremendous tackle then saw a fizzing 25 yard effort go just over the top.
However, Barlone caught Skelmersdale out again in the 67th minute, running onto a diagonal ball from the left and slotting past Fearon.
A couple of minutes later Skelmersdale got a goal back. A ball from the right found Mitchley and he fired home.
Mitchley went close to equalising on 75 minutes, but headed over after Rob McIntosh found an overlapping Peter Wylie on the right.
Skelmersdale were pushing hard to level matters and got caught out seven minutes from time. Barwell left-back Eddie Nisivic hoisted the ball over the Skelmersdale back-line, Jon Stevenson ran clear and chipped the ball over an advancing Fearon for the killer goal.
