SKELMERSDALE TAKE IT EASY IN COUNTY CUP
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 5 LITHERLAND REMYCA 2

It is fair to say that Skelmersdale took it easy against the lowly positioned North-West Counties League side in the Liverpool County FA Senior Cup. Manager Tommy Lawson only fielding two of the starting line-up that had done so well at Buxton on Saturday and when they romped into a 3-0 lead after just 22 minutes it looked a fully justified decision.
The first goal arrived after 4 minutes. Josh Sumner was tripped by Anthony Mee and although REMYCA goalkeeper Tom Bradley made a good effort, Connor McCarthy converted from the penalty spot.
The second goal was created by Valtar Fernandes; the recent Portuguese signing went on a mazy run before sending a wonderful diagonal ball across the REMYCA penalty area for Jack Golding to slide into the far corner.
McCarthy was in a persistent mood all night and when he made it 3-0, Skelmersdale eased off somewhat.
However, REMYCA deserve praise for their efforts on the night and Ben Anderson was on hand to tap-into the Skelmersdale net on 34 minutes to give his side a “consolation.”
By half-time though, the Skelmersdale supporters wondered whether it might be a bit more than a consolation as Anderson struck another in added time.
Tom Ince came on at half-time to replace Golding who had picked up a knock in the first period and within seconds he acted to restore the balance. Gathering the ball in the middle of the park, he advanced on the REMYCA goal before sending the ball behind a defender to Sumner, who sent s shot under goalkeeper Bradley.
The rest of the half was a contest between goalkeeper Bradley and Skelmersdale, with the goalkeeper emerging with a great deal of credit and showing he is a player to keep an eye on making a number of quality saves.
In the 86th minute Skelmersdale netted a fifth, Bradley having no chance at all when Phil Mooney beat him with a terrific dipping shot from around 25 yards. Mooney had come near to scoring ten minutes before that and just to prove it was no fluke hit the crossbar with a similar effort on 88 minutes.
As an exercise it allowed Tommy Lawson to give his fringe players a good run out and it perhaps more significantly allowed him to rest a large number more and give Alan Burton a comeback run-out, before they take on a busy Evo-Stik League schedule over the next month or so.
