A GOOD EFFORT BY A YOUNG SKELMERSDALE SIDE
WORKINGTON 3 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 0
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Skelmersdale United’s involvement with the Doodson Sports Cup this season was a brief one. It could be said that manager Tommy Lawson has bigger priorities this season after he elected to name only two of the starting eleven against Matlock in his starting eleven at Borough Park. But the team went down with honour in some nasty weather.
Workington took the lead after nine minutes, Conor Tinnion who was arguably the best player in both teams on the night lifted the ball over advancing Skelmersdale goalkeeper George Johnson and Joe Mwasile tapped home from very close range.
Down the other end in the 22nd minute Jack Owen threatened but was beaten to the ball by a hairs breadth by home goalkeeper Jonny Jamieson.
Workington’s second came just before the half-hour mark. Tinnion cutting in from the left before unleashing a raking shot that flew low inside the far post.
The hosts continued to press up until the break and Peter Wylie brought himself praise for a tremendous goal-line clearance from Matty Tymon’s header on 42 minutes, before Johnson made a fine save from Tinnion’s attempt to lob him right on the interval whistle.
In a great start to the second-half Skelmersdale went close four times in a five minute spell that possibly deserved reward. Ross Lloyd swung the ball right to left but Owen fired over the crossbar then Jamieson saved at Josh Nicholson’s feet, before Curtis Thompson had a shot grasped well by Jamieson and in one more real scare, home full-back Jake Simpson somehow headed over his own crossbar.
The rest of the half ebbed and flowed, with both teams playing some excellent football, Workington having more of the possession, Skelmersdale looking sharp on the counterattack.
Workington’s Alex Salmon went close on a couple of occasions before he finished the game off with a third goal in the 69th minute, home substitute Adam Telfer weaving a route to the goal-line before pulling the ball back for Salmon to fire home.
Skelmersdale still sought a goal and Owen and Phil Mooney were denied by Jamieson before the end, but one highlight was a magnificent diving save from Johnson, going very low to his right to palm away a shot from Telfer after Salmon had set him up.
It was a great effort on a muddy pitch and as Tommy Lawson commented after the match; “They (the young players) certainly show that we are getting things right as far as developing players is concerned.”
