DANNY BOY LEADS TOMMY’S SONGS OF PRAISE
KING’S LYNN TOWN 0 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 3
By Neil Leatherbarrow
A Dan Mitchley hat-trick had Skelmersdale United manager Tommy Lawson singing the praises of his players after a magnificent 3-0 success in Norfolk, that puts Skem a massive ten points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division and piles the pressure on the chasing teams that have games in hand to pass them, as now they really must raise their game to do so in the remaining weeks.
After surviving an early scare when Lynn top scorer George Thomson just failed to reach a Dave Bridges cross, Skelmersdale were much the sharper side and by the 22nd minute they had fairly romped into a 2-0 lead.
The opening Skelmersdale goal arrived after just eight minutes and it was a proper team goal. Debutant goalkeeper Steve James started the movement by releasing Ben Tollitt down the right-wing, he cut inside and found Mitchley, who cleverly opened up an angle for himself and fired a wonderful effort around home goalkeeper Alex Street.
Mitchley’s goal was no fluke though, he had only been denied by an excellent last gasp challenge by Lynn’s Henry Eze in the 3rd minute.
The hosts pressed but Skelmersdale’s strength all season has been their defence and they got no change at all for their toils.
Eventually Skelmersdale broke in the 21st minute, but the move looked dealt with by defender Eze who was trying to shepherd the ball out of the play but hadn’t bargained for a determined character called Connor McCarthy, Mitchley’s strike partner nicked the ball and was fouled by a now panicking Eze.
A minute later, after the home teams protests subsided, Mitchley showed no mercy as he stepped up and gave Street no chance at all with his spot-kick.
Straight after the interval Mitchley went close to completing his hat-trick but another great save by Street made him wait a while before he could lay claim to the matchball.
King’s Lynn pressed again, but again the Skelmersdale defence dominated with particular credit going to goalkeeper James, he is on loan from Preston North End and he deservedly received credit from a number of quarters for his display.
The game was finished as a contest in the 63rd minute and this time Mitchley could celebrate his maiden Skelmersdale hat-trick, a fine diagonal ball setting him up with a run direct on goal that resulted in a clinically dispatched finish that makes Mitchley the third highest scorer in the Evo-Stik Premier Division charts and only two off top-spot.
After the game Tommy Lawson was quite naturally delighted by his side’s ninth away league victory of the season. He said; “Most important was the manner in which we achieved the victory. We worked very very hard for every ball and were far sharper than them. . . I think we showed pride in what we were doing, we defended well and won the battles all over the park.” Tommy then singled Mitchley out for praise, when he said: “The three goals from Danny Mitchley were outstanding. All three including the penalty were quality strikes. . . You want to see goals of that quality when you come to watch football, I sure the crowd enjoyed them, I know I did.”
