BOOTH BELTER PUTS SKEM ON DOUBLE ROUTE
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 2 ILKESTON 1
By Simon Driscoll
The first Saturday home match of the year at Stormy Corner was one to cherish as debutant striker Dylan Vassallo and Robbie Booth opened their accounts in front of goal to seal back-to-back wins for Skelmersdale United and to make it a double (home and away victories) over Ilkeston who have had a mixed few days. Strikes in the ninth and 78th minutes were enough to move the Blues clear of the relegation zone and close the book on a miserable few days for Ilkeston.
An early chance for Paul Woolcott forced a save from Robins ‘keeper Jamie Hannis but the Ilkeston stopper was beaten just before the ten minute mark when a superb long ball from Kenny Strickland found Vassallo who fired the hosts in front.
The lead could have been doubled when Max Hazeldine chased a long pass only to put the ball past the post. Valter Fernandes threatened the Robins defence with a dangerous cross on 15 minutes before a clever move allowed Vassallo to force a block from the Ilkeston defence.
The visitors best chance of the first half hour came from Michael Williams as he forced a last ditch clearance from Robert McIntosh who could only look on minutes later as Daniel Udoh put Dexter Atkinson through on goal but he proved to be offside. Both sides had chances late in the half with Williams heading narrowly passed the post from a corner before Luke Shaw forced a superb tipping save from Skelmersdale ‘keeper Martin Fearon.
Ilkeston came close to an instant impact in the second half as Udoh forced a save from Fearon and from the resulting corner from Danny Gordon, Michael Williams glanced the ball past Fearon to level at 1-1. Skelmersdale had a good chance to regain the lead a few minutes later as Robbie Booth connected to a corner from Louis Corrigan forcing a save from Hannis before a clever cross from Corrigan just before the hour mark saw McIntosh head achingly past the post.
Corrigan continued his tenure as creator with a dangerous free kick over the bar in the 69th minute. Before a dashing run into the box from Hazeldine on 77 minutes saw a poor clearance fall to Booth on the edge of the box who made no mistake in firing into the top corner to put Skelmersdale back in front at 2-1.
The hosts push for a third saw a stunning save from Hannis as he tipped Tony Rendell’s header over the bar but Ilkeston had two good chances to seal a second equaliser as Shaw curled a free kick from over the bar before a late chance for substitute Curtis Burrow went wide.
