SKEM TOO QUICK FOR THE OLYMPICS
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 4 RUSHALL OLYMPICS 1
Report by Simon Driscoll
Skelmersdale United sealed a second win in four days at Stormy Corner thanks to a brace from Max Hazeldine with strikes in either half from Robbie Booth and Dylan Vassallo completing a 4-1 rout of Rushall Olympic.
Despite the intermittent wind and rain on Tuesday night, both sides made good starts with Zak Martin forcing an early stop from Martin Fearon before Nathan Fox hit past the near post from a corner.
Skelmersdale caught Rushall on the counter in the ninth minute and the attack saw Max Hazeldine fire across goal only to see the ball ping off the post. However, Skem soon went one better when Robbie Booth advanced into the box before clipping the ball inside the near post past Ryan Price to open the scoring in the 11th minute.
Rushall had a great chance to draw level as Alex Reid cut through the Skem defence before forcing a strong save from Fearon but again Skem countered and were unlucky not to go two up when Hazeldine put Vassallo through on goal, he fired past Price before being denied for offside.
Kris Taylor swept an effort over the bar for Rushall before an intricate one-two between Chris Almond and Hazeldine saw the latter loop the ball over the bar.
A near post header from a looping corner was Rushall’s best chance of the first half hour but they were soon 2-0 down on 34 minutes as Vassallo slipped a superb pass through to Hazeldine which saw him race towards goal before slotting past Price.
Rushall contributed to their own downfall six minutes before the break as a challenge in the Skem area saw the Pics appeals to the referee allowing Skem to take advantage with a quick counter, which saw Hazeldine collect a superb through pass to curl past Price for a 3-0 lead.
The lead could have been four at the break as Almond clipped a shot just past the post.
Skem’s domination continued into the second half with a clever cross from Booth on 47 minutes seeing Hazeldine head past the near post.
Rushall hit back as Reid ran through the home defence before clipping an effort past the near post but they were to rue the effort as a few minutes later, Dylan Vassallo latched onto a long pass and with Price advancing, the midfielder chipped the ball from long range into an empty net for 4-0.
Keiran Morris came close to reducing the deficit as he volleyed against the post from a corner but the best chance for Rushall came on 82 minutes as Tony Rendell conceded a penalty which saw substitute Jordan Fitzpatrick force a superb low save from Fearon.
However, Rushall did get a late consolation as Morris flicked on a corner which Fitzpatrick tapped in for 4-1. It was Skem who had the last say as substitute Will Meredith swept a dangerous cross past the post.
