SKEM LOSE DERBY BY ODD GOAL IN FIVE
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 2 MARINE 3
By Simon Driscoll
A stunning strike from Stephen Wainwright sealed a contentious 3-2 for Marine FC as they defeated Skelmersdale United in the ‘M58 derby’ on Tuesday night. The game itself was the subject of doubt after a heavy downpour across Tuesday but excellent work from the Skem staff got the game on and set up a five-goal thriller.
Marine set the pace early on with a dangerous cross from Alex Davies failing to connect to an attacker much to the relief of the Skelmersdale defence before a cross from debutant Ronnie McCarthy just a minute later threatened the Marine backline. The deadlock was broken in stunning style on 15 minutes as former Skem striker Danny Mitchley fired the visitors ahead with an effort from just inside the area.
The lead was doubled within two minutes after a foul from Valter Fernandes saw Mitchley converted superbly from the penalty spot to open up a 2-0 lead and leave the home fans in sheer disbelief. The home fans had cause to celebrate on 27 minutes though as a corner from Louis Corrigan sailed straight in past Matty Cooper to make it 2-1.
Skelmersdale drew level just before the half-time interval as Christopher Almond collected the ball and advanced on the defence before firing a superb shot over Cooper and into the top corner to send the sides into the break level at 2-2.
However, the visitors regained the lead within two minutes of the restart as a looping shot from Stephen Wainwright sailed past Martin Fearon made it 3-2 and left Skelmersdale with a task on their hands in the heavy rain.
Skelmersdale looked to have levelled on 68 minutes after a clever cross from Almond found Max Hazeldine who’s effort cannoned off the bar and goal line before coming back out. The officials denied the effort despite clear proof the ball had crossed the line but Skelmersdale remained behind at 3-2.
The deficit could have got worse for the hosts when a horror of a back pass from Kenny Strickland was collected by Mitchley but he wasted the chance of a hat-trick as his shot looped over Fearon but also the frame of the goal. Skem battled late on to try and salvage a draw but to no avail as they slipped to back-to back defeats.
United line up, Fearon, Fernandez, Corrigan, McIntosh, Rendell, McCarthy, Strickland, Vassallo, Hazeldene, Woolcott, Almond, Subs Tuck, Mooney Not used, Murphy, Holden
