Barwell 3 Skelmersdale United 1
By Murray Dworkin
Relentless Run Continues as Canaries Conquer Skem
Barwell marched on to a tenth successive league win, a twelfth overall, with a hard working performance against a Skelmersdale side who came to Kirkby Road with defence in mind.
A penalty from Ant Carney and two headers from Man of the Match Richard Lavery put paid to the Skelmersdale challenge as they tried to catch the home side on the break but ran out of steam.
Barwell made a bright start and the lively Sam Hollis created a superb chance for Carney but his shot did not trouble Martin Fearon in the away goal.
Carney was again in the action soon after as he tried to round Fearon but the away stopper dived well and grabbed the ball at Carney’s feet.
Skem were not to be overawed and responded with an attack from new signing Michael Brewster whose left foot shot from the edge of the box went narrowly the wrong side of the post.
Barwell could have scored midway through the half when a ball floated into the away box found the head of Liam Kay but his contact was not enough to find the net.
Shaun Tuck of Skelmersdale was impressive as he challenged the home defence but as he ran through he received a minimal contact from Kay, went down and Kay received a yellow card.
On the half hour, Barwell thought they had scored but a Brady Hickey effort was cleared off the line by Louis Corrigan.
Barwell continued their assault and Eddy Nisevic fizzed a shot from 35 yards that almost shaved the post.
A minute before half time, Barwell went ahead. Alex Tomkinson was upended in the box by Phil Mooney and referee Nick Hobbis pointed to the penalty spot. Carney stepped up and converted the spot kick.
Three minutes before the hour, Skelmersdale drew level. A searching ball down the left found Tuck who shot from distance beating Liam Castle as he dived across his line.
As the second half progressed, Barwell took control. Two minutes after the equaliser, the Canaries were back in front. A long ball into the box from Hickey found Lavery’s head and the ball was in the back of the net.
The home side’s tails were definitely up and two minutes afterwards a cross from Hickey was met on the turn by Sam Hollis who volleyed drawing an excellent save at his post from Fearon.
Two should have become three when Hollis passed across the six yard line to Carney but the forward’s shot was not true and Fearon was able to gather.
Barwell were in scoring mood and grabbed a third after 72 minutes. Another excellent cross from Hickey again found Lavery in the box. Although he had the attentions of the Skelmersdale defence, he was able to head the ball into the net for a second time.
With ten minutes to play, Lavery was looking for his hat trick but as he received the ball on the edge of the box, his left footed volley flew well over the bar.
As Skelmersdale tired, Hickey almost had the last word. He shot from a tight angle but was met by Fearon who saved well at his post.
So Barwell’s winning run in the league moved into double figures and the stage now moves to Ashton United’s Hurst Cross Ground for Saturday’s match with both teams vying for a play off spot.
Barwell Team: Liam Castle, Scott Lower, Eddy Nisevic, Liam Kay (Declan Towers 65), Joe Ballinger, Richard Lavery, Alex Tomkinson, Nigel Julien, Sam Hollis (Aaron Daniels 79), Brady Hickey, Ant Carney (Owen Story 72).
