GOOD PERFORMANCE BRINGS A POINT
HYDE UNITED 1 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 1
By Neil Leatherbarrow
All the goals arrived in a two minute period around the hour mark at Ewan Fields, yielding a very satisfactory point for Skelmersdale, but leaving the thought in manager Tommy Lawson’s mind that maybe they might have more as he commented; “If someone had told me before the game that we would draw I would have taken that, but in hindsight we could have had all three.”
Skelmersdale had been the better side for most of the first-half and were perhaps a little unlucky to go into the break level having hit the crossbar and had a header go inches wide. Tommy Lawson made formation changes after the interval and they initially worked when Skelmersdale took the lead on 57 minutes, however, a swift equaliser lifted the hosts and made it a much closer game in the closing stages, in conclusion many would argue that a draw was the fair outcome but it wouldn’t be a biased view to agree with Tommy’s opinion.
The opening exchanges were well balanced with one thing crystal clear, there was going to be plenty of football on view from both teams as they both sought to create chances, by the end, the former was successful, but the latter was lacking.
On 18 minutes Skelmersdale went very close to scoring. An exchange of passes put the ball at Vince Bailey’s feet and from 18 yards he lifted the ball over home goalkeeper Sam Vince, the ball hit the crossbar and dropped down to the right of the goal to an alert Kenny Strickland, but goalkeeper Vince scrambled back to pull off a terrific reaction save to Strickland’s goalbound effort.
On 24 minutes Max Hazeldine had a shot deflected away by home defender Laurie Bell, then on 27 minutes Vince palmed away a Louis Corrigan free-kick.
Probably the best chance of the half came in the 29th minute, Strickland drove in a corner from the left and Tony Rendell got himself above everyone at the far post, his attempt to tuck his header inside the post was misaimed by inches.
Tommy Lawson introduced Scott Bakkor at half-time and moved Hazeldine out into a slightly wider position on the right, the difference was obvious on 57 minutes. Bakkor dropped deeper and received the ball from a Skelmersdale defender, he made ground into the Hyde half then released the ball to an on the run Hazeldine on the right side, as he reached the outside of the penalty area the teenager sent the ball low to the far side of the box to Chris Almond, who after creating an angle with his first-touch sent a right-footed shot past Vince’s left hand and into the net.
It was short-lived advantage and when Hyde substitute Sam Fitton took the ball midway into the Skelmersdale half there appeared little or no threat. With nothing at all on from about 30 yards Fitton looked up and unleashed a shot that swerved all over the place, at first Skelmersdale goalkeeper Martin Fearon took a step to the left, before the ball pitched right in front of him and went to his right for the leveller.
The goal did give Hyde a lift and they started to have more possession, but Skelmersdale defended well and barring one excellent one handed save from Fearon on the 64th minute Hyde didn’t pose a serious problem.
Skelmersdale had one more quality opportunity, but goalkeeper Vince soon frustrated Almond in the 77th minute, leaving the game to fizzle out in the late stages.
