HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF FOR TEN MAN SKELMERSDALE
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 0 NANTWICH TOWN 1
By Neil Leatherbarrow
When Skelmersdale travelled down to Nantwich Town on Boxing Day they reaped nothing for a battling performance, due to a hotly disputed Nantwich 1-0 penalty winner in the 88th minute. Another Bank Holiday on Monday brought Nantwich to Stormy Corner, a close contest and a battling performance from Skem; seventeen minutes from the end another hotly disputed penalty and Nantwich gather the points with a 1-0 victory.
Skelmersdale started brightly and the Town goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai who is on loan from Stoke did his reputation no harm with two fine interceptions from Kenny Strickland crosses, the Hungarian under 17 internationals 6 foot five inch frame being a great help.
At the clubhouse end Skelmersdale goalkeeper Martin Fearon made his contribution to aerial displays leaving his penalty area to head clear in the 24th minute. Before tipping a speculative James Baillie shot around his post on the half-hour.
Baillie’s shot was probably Nantwich’s best effort of the half, Skelmersdale’s came in the 37th minute when Mike Brewster took the ball from Shaun Holden on the left, cut inside but saw his shot curl wide.
It hadn’t been an epic forty five minutes of football, but had been very even.
Nantwich are a big strong team and they put that to good use after the restart with a series of corners, but the Skelmersdale defence held firm, Fearon made one tip over the bar from Matt Bell and a decent save from the same man on 69 minutes.
In the 71st minute Josh Hancock carried the ball into the Skelmersdale area and seemed to go to ground very easily, a penalty was given, after a bit of pushing and shoving, Elliott Osbourne hit the penalty low to Fearon’s right-hand.
In the 81st minute Skelmersdale were reduced to ten men. Teenager Tony Donaldson tackled Steve Jones and the experienced forward appeared to stamp on Donaldson’s face, Louis Corrigan retaliated and was rightly sent off, but the question was, why wasn’t Jones also sent off? He was shown a yellow card, if the officials had seen his stamp, which they acknowledged by issuing the yellow card surely it should have been a red one.
Skelmersdale now a man down went on the offensive, but Nantwich almost netted on the counterattack, Osbourne missed with the goal at his mercy. Nantwich as they had done throughout defended out to the end of the game which by the end had lost its spirit.
