JACKSON GOAL BRINGS HOME THE POINTS
WARRINGTON TOWN 0 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 1
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Although Skelmersdale United went to Cantilever Park and brought home another three points thanks to a one goal win, the basic scoreline probably doesn’t tell the real story for Tommy Lawson’s men. The truth is they had more of the possession and more of the chances and although it is debateable as to whether it was due to bad finishing or bad luck, United should have won by more than Mark Jackson’s 74th minute goal.
It could easily have been advantage Skelmersdale from the very early stages. A Kenny Strickland corner hitting the post and home goalkeeper Andy Robertson making a great one handed save from Adam Morning in the opening three minutes.
Play did gradually begin to settle down into a pattern, with Skelmersdale pressing and Warrington relying on a more route one style, and it off one of these long balls that only a well timed tackle by Aaron Turner thwarted Ciaran Kilheeney as he looked to give Town the lead.
Midway through the half Rob McIntosh saw his header bounce clear after the ball hit Mike Heverin, before Jackson was put through and unselfishly squared the ball to Mike Phenix, however, Robertson saved his initial effort and the ensuing rebound.
Skelmersdale had done enough to lead by the interval and after the restart they stepped it up even more.
Strickland caused more chaos with a corner, this time hitting the crossbar, then a Turner shot from 25 yards was turned around the post by Robertson, before he put another shot just over the target, all this in the first ten minutes.
On the hour Warrington did rally but United keeper Sam Ashton snubbed out the threat from former “Skemmer” Phil Mooney.
The introduction of Matty Hughes livened Skelmersdale up even more. Soon he was put away down the right and Turner went close off his cross, followed soon afterwards by a Hughes diving header that went just wide.
The goal finally arrived sixteen minutes from time. The ball being fed across the home penalty area to Jackson at the far post and he coolly slotted past Robertson.
The goal was almost immediately followed by another. Off a Hughes cross, Warren Bellew saw his shot beat the far post, and then there was bedlam in the home goal area after McIntosh hit the post and the rebound was eventually hacked cleared.
Warrington pushed forward in the latter stages, but generally Skelmersdale allowed them nothing.
At the other end Josh Hine had a penalty appeal turned away, before Sam Ashton made the save of the match from Kevin Townson, but the goal wouldn’t have counted as the much travelled striker was declared to have wandered offside. Sam didn’t know that though when he made his spectacular save.
After the match Tommy Lawson was full of praise for his defence saying; “The chances didn’t go in today for various reasons, that meant that we couldn’t concede and the defence came up trumps, we allowed them nothing and against an experienced team like Warrington that is superb.” However, he still refused to talk about Luton Town until after Tuesday night’s match at home to Cammell Laird, saying; “I’ll have plenty to say about them after Tuesday, you know my policy, the next game is the most important.”
