SKELMERSDALE EASE TO THREE POINTS
GARFORTH TOWN 0 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 3
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Skelmersdale United arguably took it easy on Saturday, easing through to a comfortable three goal victory against their bottom placed West Yorkshire opposition that sees them maintain their twelve point lead at the top of Evo-Stik Division One North. There was a brief moment of worry with a blank half-time scoresheet, but that was quickly put to bed when they took the lead in the 55th minute and added two more in the next twelve minutes. The ease of the victory leaving them plenty in hand for a hard week ahead when they face three home games against teams that are either bang in form or have an urgent need for the available points.
Skelmersdale took the initiative from an early stage and after six minutes Matty Hughes latched onto a wayward back-pass but found the outside of the post barring his shot from an acute angle.
The pressure from Skelmersdale went on. An Adam Morning cross got no touch with the goal at Skelmersdale’s mercy, Josh Hine was pushed wide and hence his shot went the same way, then Paul Woolcott was tripped but no penalty was given. And there was still only fifteen minutes on the clock.
Kenny Strickland had a twenty five yard shot saved by Garforth goalkeeper Chris Senior, then Hughes had a shot blocked after Senior fumbled the ball.
Garforth make one foray into the Skelmersdale half in the 33rd minute, but Chris Kamara’s shot went high and wide.
A Strickland free-kick went inches wide then on 40 minutes Morning cut in from the left and only Ryan Esielt’s outstretched leg prevented a goal, before finally as the interval beckoned Hughes curled a shot just wide of the far post.
In the second-half it was when not if, it was when. In the 55th minute “When” arrived. Hine was fouled just outside the penalty area slightly to the right of centre, Morning lined up the free-kick and sent a superb curling left-footer high into the goal to break the Garforth resistance.
The inevitable followed. Four minutes later Morning hoisted a corner to the far post Rob McIntosh went up and headed home to make it 2-0.
Goalkeeper Senior made a fine save to deny Hine in the 67th minute, but had no chance with the striker’s next effort a couple of minutes later. A wonderfully slick move down the right-hand side between Lewis Field and Hughes resulted in the latter lifting the ball into the box, Hine read it all the way, shifted his body accordingly and despatched an overhead bicycle kick into the Garforth goal that would have made Wayne Rooney a proud man.
The game was over and it could be said that Skelmersdale eased off, but with next week's busy scheduled they couldn’t be blamed for that. Before the end Hughes, Morning, Warren Bellew and Dale Wright were unlucky not get onto the goals list, while Skelmersdale goalkeeper Sam Ashton was forced into one save from Brett Mblanda.
