WORKSOP TOWN 3 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 2
Skelmersdale went desperately close after just eight minutes, Matty Hughes having a shot cleared off the line, then Worksop had a spell on the attack and Hibbert made a magnificent tip over save from Jack Muldoon.
However, the majority of the pressure was inflicted by Skelmersdale with home goalkeeper Jonathan Stewart arguably the man of the match. In the 18th minute he saved from Dean Astbury, in the 22nd minute from Hughes and Mike Simpson shot just wide.
The game changing moment arrived in the 32nd minute from a breakaway move. As the ball came his way Muldoon had a simple way of dealing with Skelmersdale left-back Tom Ince, he produced a “Rugby League style” straight arm tackle, leaving Ince on the floor. Amazingly it was ignored by referee Mr Richardson and his hapless assistant. Muldoon sprinted away with the ball crossed into the goalmouth and Tom Denton headed home. It was not only an injustice, to rub salt into the wounds it was completely against the run of play.
Before the interval Skelmersdale continued to press, Adam Morning had a shot deflected wide then Hughes brought a superb diving save out of Stewart.
Worksop are known as the Tigers and they roared out after the break. Within seconds there league top scorer Leon Mettam showed just why he wears that crown with a top class swivel and chip in the Skelmersdale area to make it 2-0. It is probably the best finish Skelmersdale will concede all season.
It got worse five minutes later. Jack Adams came on substitute for the hosts and with almost his first touch played Mettam in; he was heading away from goal when he went down as Hibbert came off his line and then slotted home from the penalty spot.
“Skelmersdale had lost.” Though, not according to them they hadn’t. In the 53rd minute Stewart made another top class diving parry to keep out Dean Astbury, but the ball ran free to Neil Prince who fired home.
Immediately from the kick-off Skelmersdale won possession, Kenny Strickland made ground down the right then hit a thunderous drive into the Worksop net. It was without any doubt game on and the previously celebratory home supporters looked even more stunned than their players.
The rest was a succession of Skelmersdale pressure, with Worksop forced into some at times desperate defending, falling back into massed ranks and now relying on the industrial tactic of booting the ball away and holding possession by the Skelmersdale corner flag.
Astbury, Hughes, Morning. Prince and others all went close to equalising. Worksop do deserve credit for their defensive efforts, but at the end, the result and how the opening goal came about left a bad taste in the mouth of all from Skelmersdale. They were definitely unlucky to lose this one.
