MILLER HAT-TRICK PUTS SKEM INTO SEMI-FINAL
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 4 FARSLEY 0
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Skelmersdale United manager Tommy Lawson swapped his side around for the Doodson Sport Cup (League Cup) quarter-final against the men from Leeds, but they lost none of the potency in attack, despite giving top goalscorer Dean Astbury at night off. Replacing Astbury in the number nine shirt was youngster Sean Miller, who grasped the opportunity with both hands (or feet really) as he fired home a hat-trick.
Skelmersdale started positively and shots from Tom Ince, Mark Jackson and Ince again went close, before after a great first touch Farsley’s Lee Ellington gave his strike partner Aiden Savory a chance to shoot that he wasted in the 28th minute.
A minute later, Miller didn’t waste his chance, after running onto a through ball he slotted the ball into the net behind Farsley goalkeeper Tom Taylor.
The Skelmersdale second goal in the 51st minute was a devastating move. Jackson controlled a ball out of defence and played it wide to Adam Morning, he put the ball low across the face of goal and Miller launched the ball into the roof of the net.
Just before the hour it was effectively game set and match as Skelmersdale got a third goal. Jackson was the architect, with a an excellently judged chip over the Farsley left-back, Danny Greene ran onto the ball and the finish as he changed feet, said plenty about why Tommy Lawson rates him so highly.
Miller was now understandably trying hard to bag his hat-trick. He almost achieved it in the 75th minute but Taylor saved with his legs. Two minutes later he got his reward, Morning putting him away at pace, his shot going in via the foot of the far post, making him the 5005 Taxis Man of the Match.
Farsley went close to a consolation in the 82nd minute but a double save from Zac Hibbert prevented that.
Skelmersdale have now hit eight goals in two games and the news that Chorley had lost against Rushall, made their confidence even higher, because the Doodson Cup might not be their only source of silverware.
