INJURIES CITED FOR SKELMERSDALE BLANK
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 0 STAMFORD 1
By Neil Leatherbarrow
The Skelmersdale injury crisis goes on and it is now hitting the goals for column in the Skelmersdale statistics. Fielding six teenagers, one making his home debut, Skelmersdale just didn’t have the firepower to force their way back into the game when the visitors from Lincolnshire scored in the 14th minute. The reason for the problem is not difficult to work out, the signing on deadline has gone and manager Tommy Lawson has most of his first choice team sat in the stand nursing an array of injuries, forcing him to use untried youngsters instead of bringing in more experienced cover from outside.
Skelmersdale started quite well. Ashley Dunn put an early shot from 20 yards just wide, then after dodging around a pair of visiting defenders Sean Miller was thwarted by Stamford goalkeeper Will Jones.
Stamford took the lead soon after the save from Miller, Richard Jones rising above everyone at the far post to head a free-kick into the far side of the United net.
The match had shaped like one that was not going to bring a plethora of chances from the start and so it proved. The nearest Skelmersdale got to an equaliser before the interval was an Adam Morning free-kick that went over the crossbar, while Stamford didn’t generate much at all.
The second-half saw marginally more activity in the goalmouths but most of that was late on. Morning shot wide for Skelmersdale after 46 minutes then Stamford’s Charlie Binns brought a save out of United’s Zac Hibbert, before Miller made keeper Jones make another stop.
Skelmersdale are known for getting on top late in a game and they didn’t disappoint, and but for a pair of magnificent saves from Stamford’s Will Jones they arguably could have grabbed a point. Jones acrobatically tipped a Kenny Strickland shot over the bar in the 85th minute, then a minute later diving full length to his left to frustrate 18 year old striker Connor McCarthy.
Hibbert made a spectacular save from Binns in a late Stamford counterattack, before in one last foray, Morning put the ball right across the face of the Stamford goal in added time, but sadly no one could get a vital touch.
Physically strong Stamford were very well organised and did a fine job of blunting the Skelmersdale attack, they deserve praise for the way they went about picking up three points and it is likely that they have secured their place in the division for next season. Tommy Lawson said after the match that he expects two or three players to return for Tuesday’s clash at home to Worksop Town, one of which Mark Jackson will make a difference up front. Results elsewhere went Skelmersdale’s way, so a play-off place is still not off the radar yet.
