FEARON SAVES TWO PENALTIES AS SKELMERSDALE GO INTO SEMI-FINAL
BOOTLE 1 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 1
(Skelmersdale won 4-3 on penalties)
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Skelmersdale United clearly had one eye on Saturday’s FA Trophy tie at AFC Fylde when the selection was made for Tuesday night’s Liverpool County FA Senior Cup Quarter-Final match as Tommy Lawson made big plenty of changes from the line-up that had comprehensively dumped Chorley out of the FA Trophy last week. But Skem still had enough in the locker to fight back from a goal down and then keep their nerve in a penalty shoot-out at the end, to clinch victory.
Both goalkeepers were kept busy in a close first-half which ended with the hosts taking a slender lead into the half-time break.
The Bootle goal arriving in the 33rd minute when after a cross from the right deceived the Skem defence, Tom Peterson was on hand to slam home a volley that left Skelmersdale goalkeeper Martin Fearon no chance at all.
Skelmersdale exerted plenty of pressure after the interval and just when it was starting to look like Bootle would hold on Skelmersdale struck in the 77th minute. Yaw Gyimah won a bouncing ball just outside the penalty area and pushed the ball through the home defence, Isaac Kusaloka was put one on one with Bootle goalkeeper Dave Moran and slotted home the equaliser.
Before the end Fearon made a tremendous diving save at a Bootle striker’s feet at one end, before Skelmersdale had a goal disallowed for offside when the Bootle backline was in a state of sheer pandemonium.
Tom Ince, Kenny Strickland, Louis Corrigan and Tom Hardwick all found the net in the penalty shoot-out for Skelmersdale before Fearon made his second crucial spot-kick save from Sean Coulton’s penalty (Bootle’s fifth), to secure cup holders Skelmersdale a place in the semi-final draw.
