LAWSON LOOKING TO BUILD ON SALFORD SUCCESS
By Neil Leatherbarrow
Skelmersdale United manager Tommy Lawson will be looking forward to the next couple of weeks, as after Saturday’s fine performance against Salford City his side take on a run of four games that should on paper yield a few points.
Tommy Lawson said; “It was an important win on Saturday and one that left me very pleased, especially for the supporters who back the lads through thick and thin. I told the lads after the Stamford I was going to bring in a couple of new faces to freshen things up and make it a bit more competitive for places in the team. Based on the evidence from Saturday it worked well. I want us to go now and finish the season strongly”
The run starts with a trip to Hyde United on Saturday, then a home game against Whitby Town on Tuesday 22nd March. Skelmersdale have already beaten Hyde twice this season 2-1 at Stormy Corner and away at the very start of their FA Trophy run.
Easter weekend begins with a visit to Matlock Town on Easter Saturday then a home game against FA Trophy semi-finalists Nantwich Town on Easter Monday. Skelmersdale have beaten Matlock this season, plus although they lost on Boxing Day, they performed well at Nantwich.
It will certainly be a close game at Ewen Fields on Saturday. Skelmersdale are four points above the men from the east of Manchester with both teams having played 36 matches. The three meeting this season opened with a 3-3 draw at Stormy Corner that was memorable for a Tony Rendell rocket that set up a replay. The replay was actually played twice as the first attempt was abandoned after 20 minutes because of fog. However, with a makeshift side due to traffic problems around Manchester, Skelmersdale won 1-0, with again Rendell having an outstanding game. In the league meeting at Skem in February a brace from Max Hazeldine were enough to give Skem a 2-1 win. So it is expected to be tight on Saturday.
Tuesday sees Skelmersdale’s first encounter with Whitby, the North Yorkshiremen make the long trip in need of points as they sit in 21st place, ten points behind Skelmersdale, so be it with a game in hand. They will have all to play for, making it a difficult game for the 7-45 kick off.
