SKELMERSDALE SET TO LOSE SECOND YOUNGSTER IN 3 MONTHS TO FOOTBALL LEAGUE?

Local youngsters are reminded that the trials for the Skelmersdale United Academy take place on Thursday evening 24th November at Stormy Corner, at 6pm. Details of the fulltime educational / football course are in last week’s Champion, but anyone missing out on that information can still put their name down by phoning 07879 994718. Who knows could you be the next player to move from Skelmersdale United to the Football League?
Speaking on Monday, Skelmersdale United manager Tommy Lawson is very worried yet very pleased as pair of Football League clubs is preparing to move for one of his youngsters, with both Portsmouth and Fleetwood Town regularly taking in Skelmersdale matches over recent weeks.
The target of their viewing is reported to be eighteen year old midfielder Benito Lowe a player whose game is developing week on week at the Uretek Stadium based club. Benito was with Sheffield United’s academy before being released and joining Curzon Ashton where he didn’t get the opportunities he hoped to get from Curzon manager John Flanagan, Tommy Lawson snapped him up during the summer and he has flourished under Lawson’s tutelage.
If Benito moved on to a Football League club he would be the second player in three months to make the same move and the fourth in three years.
It was only in September that young midfielder Tony Donaldson joined Doncaster Rovers; eighteen months ago Ben Tollitt went to Portsmouth where he has made 12 league appearances scoring one league goal. Matty Hughes a member of Skelmersdale’s championship side in 2013 and went in exchange for a club record fee to Fleetwood.
When asked about the prospects of a move Tommy Lawson said: “Naturally I don’t want to lose my most promising players, but it is great to see players we have developed here at Skem go on to make full-time professionals in the Football League. It gives the staff and the players a big motivation to see them do well and to think they were at Skem and we helped them get their”
Skelmersdale United have a busy week coming up, with or without Lowe. Having weather permitting played last night at Frickley Athletic, Skelmersdale are away to Grantham Town on Saturday 26th November, a fixture that replaces a home game against Blyth Spartans that will be re-arranged. Skelmersdale play Frickley again next week when the West Yorkshiremen visit the Uretek Stadium for an Evo-Stik Premier Division match on Tuesday 30th November, kick off 7-45pm.
