A brief travelogue for your delectation:
Mossley is a small town in Greater Manchester, situated in the upper Tame Valley and the foothills of the Pennines, 3 miles southeast of Oldham and 8.9 miles east of Manchester.
The historic counties of Lancashire, Cheshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire meet in Mossley and local government wards and church parishes correspond to their boundaries. Mossley had a population of 10,921 at the 2011 Census. It is the only parished area of Tameside, having had a parish council since 1999.
Perhaps the best known resident of the town was Private Ernest Sykes VC (4 April 1885 – 3 August 1949), awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry in rescuing injured colleagues whilst under fire near Arras, April 1917. Sykes is honoured by a Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council blue plaque erected in 1996 at the George Lawton Hall in Mossley. A second plaque was erected in 2004 at his workplace of Mossley railway station.
