FIRST WIN FOR POWELL
SKELMERSDALE UNITED 3 RAMSBOTTOM UNITED 2
Dave Powell brought success back to the Uretek Stadium in a thrilling Evo-Stik Division One North encounter with Ramsbottom United. Skelmersdale battled back from 1-0 down and 2-1 before taking all three points thanks to a superb Andy Owens free-kick ten minutes from the end.
Rammy had taken the lead in the 15th minute when a Jerome Wright free-kick was met with a diving header by away defender Sam Heathcote, duly giving him a debut goal.
Skem soon came back and Andy Owens was fouled in the penalty area ‘D’. Owens took the free-kick but it was blocked by the hand of a Rammy defender in the wall and a penalty was given. Owens also took the penalty himself and gave Rammy keeper Danny Taberner barely a glance at the ball as it roared into the net behind him.
Wright played a part in Ramsbottom retaking the lead in the 22nd minute. His cross from the left found Greg Daniels in the middle, he swivelled and shot the ball low into the Skelmersdale net.
Both teams had chances before Skelmersdale levelled just before half-time. Owens got the ball up front and was denied a shooting opportunity; instead he unselfishly played the ball to Callum Mahoney who from an angle slotted the ball into the Rammy net.
The second-half was just as competitive as the first had been except both teams were defending better.
Ten minutes from the end Skelmersdale won a free-kick on the edge of the Ramsbottom penalty area. Owens then showed why he was Man of the Match, this time his free-kick beat the wall and flew into the top corner and United were in front.
It was a rear guard action for the remaining minutes of the game which saw Skem keep their lead firmly in control. Tempers flared as the minutes ticked by and they over spilled at the final whistle, Rammy players not being too happy with the result.
SKELMERSDALE UNITED: Sims, Baxendale, Reid, Roddy, Hollett ©, Jones, Redmayne, Black, Owens, Gillespie, Mahoney Subs: Mooney, Bourne, Crook, Burey, Blackburn
