Burscough 2 Skelmersdale United 1
By Simon Driscoll
United exit Liverpool Senior Cup
After a superb win at Tadcaster days earlier, Skelmersdale United suffered defeat at neighbours Burscough in the Liverpool Senior Cup first round on Tuesday evening. United were boosted by a larger than normal following from their fans but fell behind early on as Alexander Parkes converted a penalty after just six minutes after Arnold Baxendale had upended Terry Cummings in the penalty area.
The Linnets went close to a second goal as Jamie Clark found space on the left and swept the ball across the United goal with the response from Skem seeing James Galloway fire in a free-kick was was cleared well by the home defence.
Andy Owens and Bevan Burey both had efforts on goal but failed to Joshua Samberg in the Linnets goal as the early lead continued into the half-time break. Three minutes after the restart, Cummings forced a strong save from Jack Sims from an acute angle but it was United to struck the next goal as substitute Harry Blackburn connected to a superb near post cross from Owens to level the tie.
United suffered a blow on 72 minutes as having used all three substitutes, they went down to ten men as James Galloway limped off. Burscough swept in a free-kick minutes later which drew a clever block from the defence before a crucial save from Samberg at the other end after Rob Bourne and Baxendale combined with the latter crossing for Blackburn who forced the strong save.
Burscough regained the lead on 80 minutes in bizarre style as a back-pass to Sims saw him clear into the path of Hafeez Hamzat who walked the ball into the net for 2-1. Skem had chances to draw level with Owens heading at goal only for Clark to clear his effort from under the crossbar. The final whistle blew and the hosts celebrated a huge win while United were left to reflect on a defeat that could be the only negative in a three game league run which so far has seen two wins.
