Three Off As Colls Hold United

After Tuesday's defeat on the road, Skelmersdale United resumed hosting duties in a 0-0 draw with Atherton Collieries, a game that saw everything but goals on an afternoon with three dismissals in the first half alone, two for Colls and one for United.
The sides met for the third time this season after Colls claimed a 3-0 win in the Integro League Cup at Stormy Corner back in October and the sides drew 1-1 at the Kensite Stadium in November's league meeting. The early exchanges saw both sides struggle to mount meaningful chances with the Luke Giverin firing past the post for the visitors before a save by Colls 'keeper Greg Hartley from Jordan Darr's effort on goal.
A challenge on United midfielder Mike Roddy saw Darhyll Mason go into the referee's book on 26 minutes before the game's pivotal moment came on the half-hour mark. United captain Liam Hollett collected the ball just inside his own half but a heavy touch saw him chase the ball and collide with Colls' striker Neil Chappell, both looked to have slid in heavily for the ball with Hollett seemingly coming off worse. Both dugouts and the fans on the terraces awaited the outcome which saw Chappell shown a red card before Hollett joined him in being dismissed after receiving treatment. The referee awarded a drop ball and United made a change with Jonathan Crane replacing a frustrated Alaster Redmayne.
Colls were reduced to nine men with three minutes left of the first half, Mason receiving his marching orders in a second booking for dissent after he protested a strange free-kick awarded to United after Callum Roberts and a United defender collided with Mason. The sides went into the half-time interval still locked at 0-0.
The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock as Ben Hardcastle fired a shot past the post while Roberts denied a clever effort from Iain Howard. United could have claimed all three points late on as a clever run from Bevan Burey saw him clip a shot under pressure which crept achingly past the far post. The final whistle sounded with both sides claiming a point but one which sees United extend their wait for a return to winning ways.
